Service and segregation in a non-hospital-based imaging centre
Our imaging centres will offer services to all types of patients, sometimes using the same equipment, in the same room, by the same staff. In these circumstances the goal is not only to reduce the risk of infection to staff, but also to reduce the risk of cross-infection among staff and patients. Therefore, patients must be segregated according to their risks.
Case screening
- All patients should fill in a health declaration form.
- All requests for CT thorax scans must be reviewed by the Clinical Director.
- Any queries regarding bookings should be referred to the centre in charge or the Clinical Director to determine the appropriate patient risk group.
Designation of patient risk
Although our centres have a variable case mix in designated non-hospital based buildings, all staff performing imaging examinations on all patients should take SUITABLE personal infection control measures irrespective of the patient’s risk group. This means wearing a mask (either a surgical mask or an N-95 mask), frequent handwashing, proper working clothes (including gowns) and social distancing.
There are two categories of patients attending our imaging centres:
Intermediate: Patients without suspected COVID-19
High: Patients with suspected COVID-19
The highest infection control measures must be taken for patients in the high-risk group, whilst lower precautions can be taken for the intermediate group.
Patient segregation
There are two ways patients can be segregated: by time and by location.
Time
Our centres will be constrained by the number of equipment and layout. The suitable way to segregate some patients will be by time. A dedicated timeslot should be allocated for high-risk patients.
Location
Try to site the patients and relatives in different zones to achieve social distancing.
Waiting areas and patient access will need to be segregated too.
General infection control guidelines for staff
- Ensure you are acquainted with general infection control guidelines and protocols. Keep yourself updated!
- Daily temperature checks and records.
- Note each patient's risk category. Wash your hands before and after touching patients.
- Attempt to maintain social distancing with staff and patients.
- Dispose of masks and contaminated clothing in designated areas.
- Do not eat or drink in clinical areas.
- Take sick leave and see a doctor if you develop symptoms.
These guidelines will need to be continually reviewed and updated as required.
